Photo Story Magazines

Popular in South Africa in the 60's, 70's and 80's were photo stories. Various titles were produced by Republican Press - who would later produce Supercomix titles.
Examples of titles: Mark Condor; Kid Colt; Tessa; Die Swart Luiperd; Die Wit Tier; Grensvegter; Kyk; Ruiter in Swart; Kid die Swerver; Eerste Liefde.
Here are a few covers as examples.

    2. Hi, I have been looking for these comics for such a long time & unfortunately most people couldn'tunderstand what I was talking about. Having grown up in the village, these comics were a pleasure to read & they helped me understand Afrikaans, that's how I fell in love with the language & went on to majore in Afrikaans at varsity, if I can only get my hands on them again.

  6. Being born in '70, I fondly recall these titles. However,I also recall the entertainment provided by the more risque titles from other publishers:Scope; Giggles 'n Gags (Lencil and his pencil!), Loslyf -etc. On the ovver hand, Darren, let's not forget the cleaner and exciting Battle Picture Library and War Picture Library mags. That, together with Springbok Radio's nine-thirty dossier, made for a great childhood.

    2. Hi there,

If your had the surname Bertoti back then, then I think we know each other. I did a lot of shoots with Fred Buis and company for Dennis Griffith who has sadly passed on too.

We did have a lot of fun doing them.

I progressed into film making since then.

      Please take good care there.

Love to hear from you if you want to.

    3. No need to be embarassed - you were great

    4. Heck I remember these photo books, in fact I collected them. I was totally smitten by Sister Louise who I believe her name was Valentina Bertoti. She later was featured in a photo series called Spy XO3. My other hero at the time was Captain Devil. I used to cut my hair like his and also wear sleevless shirts like him. I'm sure I still have some of his photo books in storage.
I even remember some other titles like Brute Iron, Man with no name, Steve Hawk (Beau Brummel), and Apachi to name a few of the less popular ones.

  11. George, thanks for these.

Hierdie fotoboekies verdien 'n monument en 'n museum. Ek het nog Ruiter in Swart en Swart Luiperd boekies wat ek soos goud oppas

Hell, these were true action heroes and the inspiration for all our cowboys and crooks playtime fantasies. They lived the kind of adventures dreams were made of.

As a laerskool-laaitie my deepest desire was to act alongside Ruiter in Swart in one of his stories and my night time prayer was to dream about going on an adventure with him. For years my tjommies and I guessed about the reason for "Arend van die oerwoud"'s mask; theories about him not having eyelids and stuff like that. Only being surprised years later by the revelation that he's actually Ruiter in Swart's Ben (Danie van Rensburg aka Vonk de Ridder)

What always amazed me was how Rocco de Wet could wipe out a platoon of terrs with an AK47 with the safety catch on (!). Probably just instilled the death of fear on them by his shear presence. This guy was truly amazing.

  63. Having grown up reading the comics, I was later able to get the privilege to meet Dennis Griffiths and play some parts as a villain in the second Tessa and a number of other stories. I asked Dennis about some of the characters I grew up with such as Chunkie Charlie, Saboteur, Apache, Kid Colt, Samson, She, Doctor Conrad Brandt. Some of his accounts were fascinating and bought back some wonderful memories. I acted in the mags between 1989 - 1993.

  64. I think it would be fun, from a writer's point of view, to revisit the stories and update them for a current audience. For instance, I think a truly great South African screenplay is just waiting to be made by "bringing back to life" a character from the photo-comic world and putting them to work on a major case (series of cases) in contemporary SA. I think someone with money would be willing to back such a project. Huge potential. And remember, you first heard it from me!

  65. I regarded those characters as my personal friends. They were so alive and I looked forward to meet them on the next issue.

  67. Hi, guys.

Does someone perhaps know who the actor was that played Baron Rolf du Plessis in Die Swart Luiperd & if he's still alive?

  68. Cha was played incidentally by three actors. Clive Baggaley, took over from Barry Anderson as "The White Apache".
Cant remember how long he lasted, probably around six months to a year.
Here is a YouTube link to a short documentary I found.

  72. I’d love to join this conversation re picture comic books I was on the American baseball side. I too appeared in these books. I appeared with glyndah. Peter was kid colt. Outside of that I can’t remember names. They had us climb into a “combie “ pardon the spelling. Took us to many locations for the shoot. It was great. Also did some Texan cigarettes commercials. My students at Northlands and Glenwood h s, would bring in all the new copies that I was in. We had a great time with it.
